Movie ReviewHenry V was the movie that really gave Branagh his name. While Branagh had a few minor successes before, none compared to this film. Even though some people felt that Branagh did a better job acting than directing, it was still very impressive to succeed in such a way with a difficult character like William Shakespeare’s King Henry V (Roger Ebert, Henry V). Branagh’s directing was not entirely bad, as film critic Vincent Canby admired the continuous dim lighting, both inside and outside on the cloudy, dreary battlefields. Canby said it seems at though “the sun has lost its warmth,” which makes sense in the context of the film (Vincent Canby). Branagh used a lot of short focused shots and close ups, which put more emphasis on Henry as a person (Vincent Canby). I enjoyed these closer shots, as I also felt that connection with Henry as a character to be stronger as a result. While this was not my favorite film, mostly because I did not enjoy the plot, it was regardless successful in many other ways.
