Power of CirclesIn watching Thor, one shape stood out to me: the circle. Being a shape that means connection, wholeness, and unity, I found it interesting that so many circles appeared throughout the movie, especially in situations dealing with the connection between the worlds of Thor and Jane. Jane’s lab, where she researches and begins to understand Thor’s divine world is a circular shape; even the light fixture is circular. Why would a scientist’s lab be a circle? In order for Thor, or anyone, to travel from the divine world of Asgard to the human world, they are transported by Bifröst, a spherical structure that connects the worlds. Inside the large sphere, the walls and floors are covered in golden circles and round patterns, another symbol of connection. After Thor is shot from Bilfröst, he lands on earth, leaving a circular mark in the ground from impact. The recurrence of this shape is always associated with some unity of the divine and mortal worlds with which the movie connects. I find it interesting that the “circle” is broken when Bifröst, a literal circle and also the connection between worlds, is broken.
